Dabeli (Gujarati Dish)

What Is Dabeli..?

Dabeli, kutchi dabeli is a popular snack food of India, originating in the Kutch or Kachchh region of Gujarat.

It is a sweet snack made by mixing boiled potatoes with a special dabeli masala, putting the mixture in a pav (burger bun), and serving it with chutneys made from tamarind, date, garlic, red chilies, etc. It is garnished with pomegranate and roasted peanuts.

Ingredients -

Garlic Chutney =

  • 10-11 garlic cloves

  • 2 tbsp Red chilli powder

  • 1/2 tbsp Salt Little water

Tamarind Chutney =

  • 1/2 cup soaked Tamarind

  • 2-3 dates

  • 2-3 tbsp

  • Jaggery

  • 2 tbsp Sugar

  • 1/2 tbsp Red chilli powder

  • 1/2 tbsp Salt Little water

Dabeli masala =

  • Black cardamom

  • Cinnamon

  • Stone flower

  • Bay leaf

  • 2 tbsp Dry coriander seeds

  • 1 tbsp Fennel seeds

  • 4-5 dry red chillies

Stuffing =

  • 5-6 tbsp Oil

  • 1/2 tbsp Turmeric powder

  • 3 tbsp Dabeli powder

  • 4-5 boiled,mashed Potatoes

  • Salt to taste (1 tbsp)

  • 1 tbsp Sugar

  • Masala Peanuts

  • Chopped coriander

  • Pomegranate

  • 2-3 Pav

  • Ghee for Baking

Instructions -

  • For Garlic Chutney, in a mixer add garlic cloves, red chilli powder, salt, little water and grind and make chutney.

  • Similarly for Tamarind chutney, add soaked tamarind, dates, jaggery, sugar, red chilli powder, salt, little water and grind to make chutney.

  • For Dabeli masala, in a pan take black cardamom, cinnamon, stone flower, bay leaf, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, dry red chilli and roast for 4-5 minutes.

  • For stuffing, in a pan add oil, turmric powder and prepared dabeli masala and saute for few seconds. Add boiled and mashed potatoes and mix well.

  • Then add sugar, masala peanuts, coriander leaves and combine well. Turn off the flame and take out in a plate and cool it. Add pomegranate on top.

  • After stuffing is cool down take pav and cut from center. Apply garlic and tamarind chutney and fill it with prepared stuffing.

  • Cover it and apply ghee on top of pav.

  • Now heat pan and apply ghee on it and place dabeli on it and and bake till it becomes hot.

  • Tasty Gujarati Dabeli is ready to serve.
